The nice thing about the Greco-Roman plus Carthage factions is the clear delineation between military buildings and economic ones. Spain makes for a very stable and isolated economic powerhouse, which Arevaci and Lusitani can use well. Also you are likely to lose 3/4 of your empire when all your satrapies rebel against you around Turn 5, which can be kind of a nightmare.Ĭarthage has a very weird mix of units and their late-game isn't great, but by then you're typically steamrolling your enemies so it's not as bad as you'd think. Seleucids are very cool but you don't get their fun units until late game. It's nice to have an edge of the map to your back. I have been playing Suebi and they're pretty fun, though having Wolf Warriors (DLC) are pretty integral to their mid-game armies. :-)īasically, look for factions which sound fun to you, and don't worry to much about what everyone else is playing. The desert nomads are a particularly good example. "Pergamon has great builders, great traders and amateur soldiers."Īnd I played an entire Octavian Imperator Augustus campaign on the strength of the opening cinematic for that campaign, which changed my plans and made me want Octavian to win.Īnd sometimes I'll pick a faction because I fought against them and they had some units I thought looked fun or cool. This is exemplified by the description of their faction trait in game. Meanwhile for Pergamon it was the idea of playing a nation whose strength isn't its military. As such, their kings and chieftains were chosen due to their martial prowess and wise leadership.Īnd for Cimmeria it was the idea of being an outpost on the edge of "civilisation," surrounded by "barbarian" hordes. Instead, they pursued the traditions of their Celtic and Germanic origins, venerating the cult of the hero-warrior. The Nervii would eschew all luxury, especially alcohol, which they perceived made the body and spirit weak. Such bravery was at the heart of their culture, which was Spartan-like in both outlook and reputation. "The Lusitani are fierce and agile warriors, suited to guerrilla warfare – making them excellent light infantry mercenaries – and their women are known to fight alongside the men, such is the fierceness of their culture."Īt the Battle of Sabis in 57 BCE, where their surprise attack almost defeated Caesar’s legions, they fought until only 500 of their original 60,000 warriors remained. When picking a faction to play I tend to look at their story, either on the Total War Wiki ( ) or for more recent factions the Blog ( ) and then pick someone whose story interests me.įor example it was this that made want to play the Lusitani: (I know of players who only play Rome, only play Greeks or only play Seleucids.)
I would say any faction can be the "most fun," it just depends on the player.įor example some players love to play factions with huge rosters (Rome, Seleucids, Egypt etc,) while others prefer ones with a smaller roster that has definite strengths and weaknesses that cause them to need to adapt (Lusitani, Nervii, Masaesyli, Getae etc.) Some only play a specific culture, or even a specific faction.
